“Words make you think. Music makes you feel. A song makes you feel a thought.”

— Yip Harburg

What is it about a song that draws you to it, and makes it a powerful vehicle for communicating emotions and thoughts?

Well, you’re about to find out.

In Module Three, you’ll learn:

  • How music creates emotion

  • How to use lyrics to create an emotional mood

  • How to find the best keys for the songs you sing

  • Stylistic tools to make a song your own

  • Approaches to learning a song that will deepen your relationship to it

Before we begin, choose a couple of songs that you know well. We’ll be using them later in the lessons to experiment with what you’re learning.

Don’t forget to purchase The Jazz Singer’s Handbook by Michelle Weir. You’ll get a lot more out of this module if you have her book and example CD in hand.

Remember Simon Sinek’s Golden Circle? We're going to start this lesson with a WHY question...

Why do YOU choose the songs you sing? Why does music move you?
